This Buttondown Aloha Shirt features our Huli Ka Lima print on Desert Green fabric with Moss and OD Green ink.
It’s engrained in my mind my grandma reciting “Huli Ka Lima!” and my parents explaining that instead of having your hands asking for something from the sky it should be turned down to work the earth making fruit for yourself.
As a pillar of the Hawaiian mindset, it's a value that may not have been vocalized but demonstrated by many of my uncles and enforced by strong glaring stares. One uncle in particular was uncle Kia Fronda of Waipiʻo Valley, from across the loʻi always with the classic stares filled with paragraphs of encouraging adjectives to huli ka lima.
This design is a reference to the organized piles of huli that would be on the banks of the lo’i ready to be turned down and planted into the lepo.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
