This Paniau Dress features our Hōʻīnana design on Botanical fabric with Bison and White ink.
The students of Kanu O Ka ʻĀina Charter School in Waimea asked for a design for their graduating class of 2018. After our meeting, I realized they were a class of strong individuals who would not let their circumstances stop them from achieving and being the best they could be.
Over the years we’ve shared our “Makawalu Design Process” with our designers and clients. By far, the most rewarding has been to work with the seniors of Ke Ana Laʻahana Charter School in Keaukaha and currently Kanu O Ka ʻĀina in Waimea. As the first collection featured in Kaiao_Space, we feature accessories with a selection of our “graduation prints” that we’ve created with each Senior class.
On the lee side of our island, Paniau basks in the heat of South Kohala. Its shores front emerald waters, white sand, and views across the ʻAlenuihāhā Chanel. We chose this name for this dress to commemorate that special period in our lives when we lived for the sunshine.“Pani” is Hawaiian, a term that can mean to close. When we created the pattern for this dress, we were “closing” the sleeveless by giving it sleeves. Not only were we honoring one of our favorite sites on our island, but we gave birth to an iconic style with sleeves. A simple shirt-dress, a button-up front, and a yoke and collar, this easy wear 100% cotton has been a favorite for a couple of decades. We bring it back, celebrating its simplicity and the go-anywhere-attitude.
