Waiakeakua Seersucker Ululani Dress - Khaki Seersucker
Shir and Shakar, literally meaning “milk and sugar” are the Persian words for seersucker fabric. Woven in such a way, some threads bunch together giving the fabric a wrinkled, puckered appearance. This feature causes the fabric to be held away from the skin, helping with great air circulation.
We have chosen stripe patterns in a 55% combed cotton/45% polyester blend for this celebratory capsule. What’s ingenious of this fabrication is that it doesn’t really need to be ironed!
Our hand-printing on seersucker fabric has been done with the traditional large screens. There are inconsistencies in the printing because of the ribbing in the weave. For us, the fabrication is still exciting and special. We encourage you to try it on, feel the make-up and texture. If it’s not for you, not to worry! Send it back and we’ll credit your purchase! EZ!
White ginger blossoms made up my very first design. Learning how to cut the amberlith from my friend David Hormann, I chose the ginger because I wanted to make a tee shirt for my girlfriend Nalani. Recently, the white ginger at Waiau began blooming. The blossoms in the early morning sunlight reminded me of the place where I would often take Nalani when she would come to visit me in Honolulu. It was at the base of the Ko'olau Mountains in Manoa Valley, where there was a swimming hole next to a small farm of white ginger and gardenia. The name of the river was Waiakeakua. The cut of these flower designs are a reflection of time. They honor the years that Nalani and I have been together, and share an intimate respect for both the fragile blooms and my desire to express a peaceful form.
The dress name literally means “Breadfruit Leaf Insight” and figuratively “Eternal Inspirational Knowledge". Simple, practical, and so easy! This Ululani Dress is meant for the moments you choose to live. Alluding to a life of pleasure, the purpose of the styling is the ease-of-wear, and the expectations of cool, showcasing effortlessness. Step-into-and-go, but with a nod to a comfortable fit and a little sassiness. Showing your legs along with a fitted bodice, you are on the catwalk ready for the expression!
Ululani Street is just a few blocks mauka of our shop. It cuts across town from the Wailuku River to Saint Joseph School. It was Pleasant Street before the name was changed to Ululani. Ola!
