Waikahalulu Sig on Smith T-shirt- Salmon

This Sig on Smith Tee features our Waikahalulu print on Salmon fabric with Black ink.

Between River and Richards Streets, Beretania Streets and Nimitz Highway, the downtown area of Honolulu is very familiar to me. As a child, we were always shopping either in Chinatown or on Fort Street. I also worked at the base of Bishop Street at Nimitz in the mid 70s.

Hand cutting the screen stencil of the streets of Downtown had been in the planning stages for several years. I was inspired to create this art after seeing an old map from the 1850s. The various ʻili names mentioned Waikahalulu, the central area between Kaʻākaukukui and ʻAuwaiolimu. This ʻili is in the great ahupuaʻa of Waikīkī.

The waterfalls at Liliʻuokalani Botanical Gardens, part of Nuʻuanu Stream, is named Waikahalulu. The reef that stood between Fort and Richards Street also carried the name, but it was filled in the 1850s when the harbor was dredged. One of the translations of the name means, “the roaring waters”. I’ve chosen to honor Waikahalulu, bringing the traditional name back into use.
