This Buttonup Aloha Shirt features our Nā Haumana print on Caribbean fabric with White and Waterfall ink.
The 2013 graduating class of Ke Ana Laʻahana Public Charter School believed that their experiences with hau were a good metaphor of their character as a class. The manner in which hau grows at Honohononui exemplifies their personalities. Meeting with them, and encouraging them to define their inspirations, resulted in several pencil drawings from the students. It is from these drawings that I was motivated to cut the new artwork.
We have always loved Marimekko fabrics. Their simple and bold renderings uplift spirit and showcase a happy and proud view of life. We offer this design in honor of Marimekko style and heritage. It is Brandy’s take on the tangled branches and distinctive blossoms of the hau.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
