Hōʻā Ka Mauliola Mōhalu Dress - Crimson
This Mōhalu Dress features our Hōʻā Ka Mauliola design on Crimson fabric with White ink.
Hōʻā Ka Mauli Ola
Hōʻā means to ignite. The name of this print suggests: “Illuminate your spirit!”
Kupe'e is the term for anklet or bracelet. Making them out of laua'e, kukui, ti, or any of the various kinolau, the kupe'e are the adornments for the traditional dancer of hula kahiko. Boar's tusks and shells are also crafted into kupe'e.
We seek and gather kupe'e shells to make our anklets and bracelets.
During the lowest tides and the darkest moon, the shell emerges out of the sand
feeding on the exposed rocks. The kupe'e shells adds to the percussion of the dance.
This fabric layout plays on the positive and the negative parts of the art, pushing the scale
to focus on the tiny lines that make each kupe'e distinct and unique.
We introduced this print as part of an exhibit and lecture at Bishop Museum in 2012.
Kuha'o explains, "...at the moment we tie on the kupe'e, the spirit is ignited!"
Today we fancy it up a little - just so we can talk style, life, and print - in today’s terms! The collar frames the iwilei and the poʻo, the sleeve caps the shoulder, and the length is just enough to cover the beachwear. We invite you to bring your attitude: walk deliberately, lift that chin, shake that head of hair loose…. Wear it with tights. Keep your jeans on. May everything bloom in your wake!
