'A'ali'i Ku Makani Pullover Aloha Shirt -Nautical

Size Guide

This Pullover Aloha Shirt features our ʻAʻaliʻi Kū Makani print on Nautical fabric with Blue Jay and Grapemist ink.

Resilient, firm, and steadfast, ʻaʻalii grow in buffeting winds. Its strength in withstanding the constant force of the makani makes it an appropriate symbol of Kaʻū people. Our favorite clusters of ʻaʻaliʻi, in various districts of Moku o Keawe, bloom and fruit during different months of the year.  Colors vary depending on their residence north or south,  and the fragrant pods of those dwelling in the Volcano region are perfect for lei.

I used the medium of bamboo, a rather restricting canvas, to carve a stamp illustrating this plant.  Understanding the grain of the bamboo, as well as the width and depth of the rough blank, I carved the design of ʻaʻaliʻi seed pods as a study in numbers.  Our lei ʻaʻaliʻi was for the graduating class of 2015 at Ke Ana Laʻahana, and their leader, Mapuana Waipa.

They are the future!

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
