Buttondown Aloha Shirt Grasshopper ʻAiponokamoku

Size Guide

This Buttondown aloha shirt features our ʻAiponokamoku print in Grasshopper and Honeydew.

It is customary to present a coconut tree to a child, providing food for life.  The tree matures with the child, symbolic of the long term gift of affection.  This inoa for Pomaikai`s son was given by Nalani Kanakaole.  The meaning given for this name is "The Righteous Ruler of the Island."  The niu was chosen by Pomaikai as the symbol for her son's aina piha makahiki, or first birthday luau.  I did this drawing in August of 1982 and used it originally as a pareu design.  For this 2003 issue, I re-cut the image and Kuhao did the layout.

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawaiʻi, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Fabric is machine-washable 100% cotton broadcloth. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
