This Buttondown Aloha Shirt features our Hilo Braid print on Duckling fabric with Charcoal and Overcast ink.
It’s the humidity in the air that you feel when returning home to Hilo. It’s the crisp blue morning sky framed by Maunakea and reflected in Hilo Bay. It’s the verdant hues of green on a clear day only achieved by weeks of Hilo rain. Just a few images and moments that are braided into my memory of Hilo Hanakahi. In this print, the Hilo braid is a representation of kaula, the cord that binds me to my home and the 5 points in the print represents the mauna that make up our island. This print was originally created as a collaborative element in a canvas piece with artist Kamea Hadar.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
