Hōʻā Ka Mauli Ola Buttonup Aloha Shirt - White

This Buttonup Aloha Shirt features our Hōʻā Ka Mauli Ola print on White fabric with Cadet ink.

Kupe'e is the term for anklet or bracelet.  Making them out of laua'e, kukui, kī, or any of the various kinolau, the kūpe'e are the adornments for the traditional dancer of hula kahiko.  Boar's tusks and shells are also crafted into kūpe'e.

In our halau, we seek and gather kūpe'e shells.  During the lowest tides and the darkest moon, the shell emerges out of the sand and feeds on the exposed rocks.  The kupe'e shells adds to the percussion of the dance.  Kūha'o explains, "...at the moment we tie on the kūpe'e, the spirit is ignited!"

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttonup is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
