This Hua Dress features our Kaʻanoʻi design on Peony fabric with White ink.
“Aʻohe pua nani ke kiele…” sings Aunty Edith Kanakaʻole, referring to the incomparable beauty of the gardenia blossom. The many petaled flowers are part of the coffee family and comes from Asia and Africa. The Hawaiian native, Nāʻū or Nānū, is usually smaller, and has a unique fragrance.
Kaʻanoʻi is often a term meaning “a chosen one” especially in reference to a loved one. We give this name to this design layout as it was first used for a wedding. The simple repetitive nature of the blossoms remind me of gardenia season and placing the blooms around the house and shop, filling the air with a sense of calm. It is believed that the plant has medicinal value for clearing, calming, and cooling!
