A block above our Hilo shop is Kalākaua Park. King Kalākaua spent summers in Hilo and planted the great banyan tree in the park. The king traces his lineage back to Hāloa, the first Hawaiian. The older brother of Hāloa, Hāloanalaukapalili, was stillborn and where he was buried grew the first taro plant. King Kalākaua used the taro leaf in the design of his crown in 1883 to honor his ancestors. We celebrate King Kalākaua and his lineage with the taro incorporated in our latest products!
