This Pullover Aloha Shirt features our Kani Ka Lei print on Gotham Grey fabric with Prairie Sky ink.
We gather kupe'e shells to make adornments for our hula performances. During the lowest tides and the darkest moon, the shell emerges out of the sand and feeds on the exposed rocks. The kupe'e shells adds to the percussion of the dance. Kuha'o explains, “…at the moment we tie on the kupe'e, the spirit is ignited!”
Before threading onto the braided cords, each shell is placed in “position.” Sizing and placement is important to create an even and balanced lei of shells. Of course, colors plays an important role for aesthetics!
The name of this design layout refers to the sounds of the shells when we dance. Clicking and clucking, the shells add to the percussion of the hula.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
