This tote features our Lupe Kiʻekiʻe print on Gray fabric with Turquoise and Black ink.
The 2019 gradutes of Kanu O Ka Aina presented an amazing story of their time together as a class. They brought their dreams, shared ʻolelo noʻeau, and sketched images. Our Lupe Kiʻekiʻe was born from their inspiration! The rains and winds of Waimea add to the personality of the individual. The natural elements shape their character. We honor the Class of 2019 with the use of ʻohe kapala, honoring place and alluding to their future as community leaders.
The kaula represents both the rain and the tight knit community. Their close families are the beneficiaries of the rain, the blessings of wai. The lupe, symbolic of the winds, travel in groups and remain faithful to their families. The images offer our hope for the graduates of 2019 to remain a close knit ʻohana, moving together as one, bound by their experiences, reaching for the heavens.
Over the years we’ve shared our “Makawalu Design Process” with our designers and clients. By far, the most rewarding has been to work with the seniors of Ke Ana Laʻahana Charter School in Keaukaha and currently Kanu O Ka ʻĀina in Waimea. As the first collection featured in Kaiao_Space, we feature accessories with a selection of our “graduation prints” that we’ve created with each Senior class.
