"Boy, you know who weaved that pāpale?"
Attending a Papakū Makawalu a few years back, I got pulled aside and in a firm kupuna voice it was Aunty Maluihi asking me if I knew who had woven my hat. She proceeded to describe the piko and her personal signature of my pāpale. As a gift from my Aunty Michele, it was already my favorite hat and now getting a personal description from Aunty Maluihi who wove the pāpale, it became a treasure! As if my perception of this hat couldn't get any higher, towards the end of that day Aunty pulled me aside again and said "You look good in that pāpale! Iʻm gonna name that style 'Kūhaʻo'". On the inside I died in excitement and as I put my thoughts back together I humbly told her, "Mahalo Aunty!"This design was inspired by the pāpale Aunty wove and the details she shared with me. This custom designs was featured at the Ka Ulu Lauhala O Kona conference.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
