Pāʻū O Palai Mōhalu Dress - Teal
This Mōhalu Dress features our Pāʻū O Palai print on Teal fabric with Honeydew ink.
In the story of Pele and Hiʻiaka, the first recorded hula takes place at Hāʻena, Keaʻau. As the sisters are relaxing at the beach, Pele falls asleep and travels to Hāʻena on Kauaʻi to be with Lohiʻau. For three days and three nights Pele continues to sleep….Upon her awakening, she asks her sisters to dance for her. It is Hiʻiakaikapoliopele that obliges. Her friend Hopoe taught her the hula, Ke Haʻa La Puna I Ka Makani. Puna Dances in the Wind! Soon after, Pele ask her younger sister to fetch her lover Lohiʻau on Kauaʻi. Pele gives her some tools for protection as she knows the journey will be dangerous. The Pāʻū O Palai, a skirt made of ferns, is one of these tools. Made of palaʻa ferns, Hiʻiaka used this tool to defend herself against the many enemies of the Pele clan.
Today we fancy it up a little - just so we can talk style, life, and print - in today’s terms! The collar frames the iwilei and the poʻo, the sleeve caps the shoulder, and the length is just enough to cover the beachwear. We invite you to bring your attitude: walk deliberately, lift that chin, shake that head of hair loose…. Wear it with tights. Keep your jeans on. May everything bloom in your wake!
