In the soft light under the ʻōhiʻa and koa, the palapalai is nourished by the moisture gathered. Only the best fronds are selected to be made into lei: the mature, fully developed, and dark stems. The offering of the lei palapalai on the kuahu hula is accompanied by oli, dedicated to laka.
