Paliku Surf x Aloha Collection
We encourage plantations of niu as they remain an iconic view of
tranquility. Niu Haku, young trees still with nut, is a promise of food and
protection. Trees were planted at the birth of a child, insuring that the
child will be fed and sheltered.
An octopus placed in the hole prior to the niu haku insured a strong
foundation for the new tree. The tradition takes us back to Niuolahiki and
ties we have with Tahiti.
All parts of the coconut tree are useful. Trunks are carved into pahu drums
and ‘umeke. The fronds woven into pāpale, ‘umeke, shelter, and peahi. The
fibers around the nut make strong sennit for cordage. Sweet haupia and
kūlolo are desserts from the meat and coconut milk
is the important ingredient in lū’au he’e!
At Helumoa, thousands of coconut trees once shaded the royal lands fronting Waikīkī Bay. There at Kapuāiwa, a thousand trees were planted for each warrior in Lot Kapuāiwa’s army. At Niu Pia, a plantation of trees were planted in rows and at Hilo One, the stretch of black sand is backed by more than a hundred coconut trees.
Ka niu peʻahi kanaka o Kaipalaoa! The coconut trees are alluring at Kaipalaoa!
There are Kaipalaoa Landing fronting Hilo Bay, we are reminded of the words of the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant. From the single coral polyp, a reef is born. Providing recreation and sustenance, our lives are nourished by our surroundings.
