This Buttondown Aloha Shirt features our Keahialaka print on Tangerine fabric with Charcoal ink.
The ahupuaʻa of Keahialaka, Puna, sits within the East Rift Zone. The once tall forested area was the host of the most beautiful ʻōhiʻa groves of brilliant red, yellow, and salmon blossoms. There too grew ʻieʻie, climbing to the top of the forest canopy. Much of the forest has been consumed by the current volcanic eruption of 2018.
The art was created in the early 80s as we visited the forest often to gather kinolau for our kuahu hula. Standing on the floor of the great forest, we used to look up through the vines and tall trees, enjoying the beauty of the native growth.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Buttondown is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket, while The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
