This Ululani Dress features our Lehuamamo print on Lime Seersucker material with White ink.
Lehuamamo
Attractive, stunning, and alluring, the yellow lehua commands attention! A treasured forest, Keahialaka, in Puna, used to be full of yellow lehua blossoms. (The lava eruption of 2018 flowed across the forest, covering most the the ʻōhiʻa trees.)
The lehua appears in various reds, oranges, and yellows. Remembering the location, we often return to these special trees, especially when a certain color blossom is desired.
The term lehua-mamo, comes from the description of feathers on the Mamo bird. Its yellow feathers above and below the tail, stand out on the black bird. Desired for its use in lei and capes, the Mamo is one of the cherished birds of the Hawaiian forest.
The yellow-lehua is eye catching!
Running from the Wailuku River to St. Joseph School, Ululani is a street in the Hilo Downtown area. Glancing at the homes, apartments and even businesses that are located on this street, you will understand its importance! Some of the oldest framed buildings in Hilo stand on the block between Waiānuenue Avenue and Wailuku Street. It was called Pleasant Street before being re-named. This party dress is cool, short and sweet. The highlight of this dress is about framing the upper body. This sleeveless "yoke" frames the neck and shoulders, and of course the party face. The decorative placket is sewn down, hinting to fun and style.
Show of hand
In this day and age of everything moving at the speed of light, we still do things at a more leisurely pace. Our fabrics are hand-printed, one pass of the squeegee across the silk screen at a time! This can lead to slight imperfections in the final product but we like to call this our show of hand. Rather than trying to make it perfect, these slight misses reflect the energy and the magic of the hand-made process that is our signature.
