Countless times the breadfruit captures our imagination. Appearing in dreams and creating obsessive desires, we continue to create new representations of a favorite image. Literally meaning Decorated Keaukaha, the design is a symbol of the beauty of the Hawaiian Homestead area in Hilo, home of the Kanaka'ole family.
Malie Rea wanted to create a special dress to attend the wedding of Leiola Garmon and Tony Mitchell at Kūhiō Hale in Waimea. She took former styles and tweaked them to fit her, and thus the Kahanu dress was born! A simple style was created that features the best of the feminine side. A round, open neck frames these unique features: the neck, collarbone, a hint of the nape. The cap sleeve alludes to a cover-up and the long and close-to-the-body fit gives hint to her shape. I named the style after Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole's wife, Chiefess Elizabeth Kahanu Kaʻauwai. The princess lines of the dress gave another reason to name this style after the princess.
