Waihonu Jacket Lime Lei Kauila

Size Guide

This Waihonu features our Lei Kauila design in Lime and White.

The hinahina art was first cut in the 1980s in tribute for Odetta Kauila Reyes.  As a keiki of Molokaʻi, she inspired me to cut the tiny plant.  It was at Kawekiu on the West Side that I saw my first hinahina and from that site that the plant studies were taken.

Upon our arrival of the inaugural flight of the Ohana plane which I had designed for Aunty Kauila, she took a lei hinahina poepoe off and presented it to me.  Returning to Hilo that evening I decided to resurrect the print for Aunty Kauila’s 88th birthday on April 19, 2014.

This fabric design was laid out by Kuhaʻo rather quickly.  The enlargement of the print was to emphasize the hand-cut, but also for the details to be enjoyed.  This BC design is filled with precision and insight as to how the plant grows.

Waihonu is the name of the large, tranquil pond that is nestled in the heart of Liliʻuokalani Gardens in Hilo.  This hooded light jacket is part of the "Place Names of Hilo Collection", and features a hood with drawstring, coconut buttons and can go from casual to dressy depending on what you pair it with.  Fabric is 50% linen, 50% cotton.
