Waihonu Jacket Pink Kani Ka Lei

Size Guide

This Waihonu features our Kani Ka Lei design in Pink and White.

We gather kūpe'e shells to make adornments for our hula performances. During the lowest tides and the darkest moon, the shell emerges out of the sand and feeds on the exposed rocks. The kūpe'e shells adds to the percussion of the dance. Kuha'o explains, “…at the moment we tie on the kūpe'e, the spirit is ignited!”

Before threading onto the braided cords, each shell is placed in “position.” Sizing and placement is important to create an even and balanced lei of shells. Of course, colors plays an important role for aesthetics!

The name of this design layout refers to the sounds of the shells when we dance. Clicking and clucking, the shells add to the percussion of the hula.

Waihonu is the name of the large, tranquil pond that is nestled in the heart of Liliʻuokalani Gardens in Hilo.  This hooded light jacket is part of the "Place Names of Hilo Collection", and features a hood with drawstring, coconut buttons and can go from casual to dressy depending on what you pair it with.  Fabric is 50% linen, 50% cotton.
