ʻUala Kaʻa
King Kamehameha I planted sweet potatoes on the hillside at Makiki. There’s a story
of a rat biting into one, causing it to roll downhill and sprout. Today, the area is still
called “ʻuala kaʻa” or rolling sweet potato.
The ʻuala is a valuable food source, especially because of it’s long shelf life. This means that the ʻuala can be taken on canoe voyages. When at sea, food staples are an important consideration. The value of the ʻuala cannot be underestimated!
ʻAʻalahonua
“Ke honi maila kō Hilo Palikū, kū ka makani he ʻAʻalahonua kiʻi ua.”
This traditional ʻōlelo noeʻau speaks of taking in the fragrance as the rain-following-winds stir the landscape! The wind ʻAʻalahonua of our Hilo district is unique. Carrying the scent of the land, we are immediately reminded of the current state in which nature is in. If there had been lots of rain, the dampness of our surroundings would be strong.
If the season has been dry, the smell of the dirt would fill our senses.
Our relaxed fitting shirt, without the button-down collar, reminds us to enjoy the moment! With a cold beverage in hand, we tackle the day’s surprises in leisure. The linen/cotton fabrication (55%/45%) hangs loose and allows the wind to pass through. Take in the smells, enjoy the day, and unwind!
We’re experimenting with a different approach to our printing, seeking to reduce
shirt weight. This means that you can dress more comfortably! We continue to sew each shirt, one-by-one in Honolulu, intent on keeping the aloha spirit within each piece!

SHIPPING & STORE PICKUP We offer domestic and international shipping options for online orders through USPS, FedEx, and DHL International. Please allow at least 2 - 3 business days for your order to be packed and processed for shipping. The shipping estimates listed at the time of the order are based on when the parcel leaves our premises, not when the order is placed. Please contact your chosen carrier with your tracking information to inquire about the estimated date of arrival and location of your package. Orders are shipped out Monday-Friday. Orders that come in on Friday after 10am HST will not be processed until the following Monday, even if the request is for overnight shipping. If you live on Hawaiʻi island and would like to pick up your order at our Downtown Hilo Flagship store, please select the "Local Pickup" option. Please allow 24 hours for us to get your order ready.
