Ulunui
This is the very first of the ʻulu designs. It was one of the five cuts I had initially chosen to be taken to Honolulu to be printed in bulk. Back in 1987, life was quite simple. There was no big meaning for why things were done. In that simple nature, because the breadfruit was so big, it was called ʻulunui. Nalani's sister's name is ʻUlunuiokamāmalu; we often give reference to her as ʻUlunui, or Big ʻUlu. This print is indeed a part of her legacy.
Holopali
Driving along the windward side of Oʻahu, we become intimate with the Koʻolau Mountains. Between Kualoa and Punaluʻu, the road runs along the coast and at times, at the base of the mountains. It is this close proximity that we enjoy the elements of both land and sea. The wind Holopali is a companion at Kaʻaʻawa. It carries
both moisture and salt, giving us mauka and makai.
This shirt’s fabrication of woven ripstop (90% polyester 10% spandex) makes us feel like this cooling wind is surrounding us! It is lightweight and lies over the skin, allowing enjoyment of the tropical clime. A button-up with a relaxed collar, rounded tails and a simple stylish placket makes this a favorite go-to shirt.
