Uku ʻAkoʻakoʻa
The Kumulipo documents the creation of Hawaiʻi. Beginning in the dark, life is born in stages. “Hanau ka uku koʻakoʻa, hanau kana, he ʻākoʻakoʻa, puka…” Line fifteen describes the birth of the coral, one of the first to be born in Hawaiʻi. The ʻākoʻakoʻa is the foundation to the islands.
At Koʻolau Poko the coral flats are favorite grounds for heʻe. It is there that my father taught us to look for the octopus hiding in the coral rubble. This art, coral fragments, reminds me of the grounds where my father took us.

Driving along the windward side of Oʻahu, we become intimate with the Koʻolau Mountains. Between Kualoa and Punaluʻu, the road runs along the coast and at times, at the base of the mountains. It is this close proximity that we enjoy the elements of both land and sea. The wind Holopali is a companion at Kaʻaʻawa. It carries
both moisture and salt, giving us mauka and makai.
This shirt’s fabrication of woven ripstop (90% polyester 10% spandex) makes us feel like this cooling wind is surrounding us! It is lightweight and layers the skin allowing enjoyment of the tropical clime. A button-up with a relaxed collar, rounded tails, and a
