PAREU HUAKAʻI
Searching for the perfect pareu fabric is always in my mind. Wanting 100% cotton is a must and then the fabric weight is considered for the many uses. The most recent discovery is HUAKAʻI, a heavy-weight pure cotton fabric that is manufactured in Japan which undergoes several steps to create its unique hand. We gave its name as “the journey” in which this fabric will serve you is our intent. May this fabrication always be at your side!
Kauʻi Pareu
On our first day of business back in 1985, freshly cut flowers were delivered. Ginger, heliconia, and anthuriums - mostly from the farm at Pueopaku, became the centerpieces of our shop. The blossoms filled the space with energy and fragrance.
Kauʻi was a fellow hula dancer. Her farm at Pāpaʻikou, was the source of the beauties in the weekly arrangements. She grew the largest flowers and shared the bounty with us. The red and pink gingers became a popular visual offering with the explosion of color. For more than twenty years our store was blessed with these blossoms!
The art of the red gingers was done in her honor. We call this cut “Ka Uʻi” or literally, “The Beauties.”
