Kinolau Kanaloa
In ceremony and ritual meals the banana leaf is our tablecloth, supporting the food and covering our bowls. In the imu, the leaves add to the steaming process in cooking the pig.
"He maiʻa ke kanaka" refers to the substitution of man in certain ceremonies.
Maiʻa is one of the body forms on land for Kanaloa, the god of oceans.
Bananas grew abundantly alongside Waiolama at Piʻopiʻo. Rainfall at Hilo is heavy at times, overflowing the banks of Waiolama, nourishing the maiʻa. This study of leaves took place there, just back of the open green spaces fronting Hilo One.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
