Lei Kelohilani

Several years ago, I saw a lei that transported me way back in time.  It was of the lehua blossoms, but kui (sewn) in a very unique manner.  Fine ropes of lehua blossoms were entwined together, red and yellow, to create a masterpiece!  Each lehua blossom was slowly taken apart so that each pod that held the lihilihi (the eyelashes) were separated.  It was then strung together lovingly to make strands of red and strands of yellow.  Kuana Torres made this lei.  His grandmother Lulu Kelohilani Kahele used to create these special lei and he remembered how she would spend great lengths of time in making them.  To celebrate his grandmother's memory, he makes this as a lei ʻaʻi.  This design honors this special kupuna and her grandson, and the lehua of Moku O Keawe.  E ola, e Kelohilani!

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
