Māluakiʻiwaikealoha
Māluakiʻiwai ke aloha, hoʻopulu ka liko māmane.
My love is for the Māluakiʻiwai breeze that moistens the flower buds of the māmane.
Māmane flourishes in the arid high altitude areas of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. A native to Hawaiʻi, it is found on every island except for Molokaʻi and Niʻihau. The endangered palila bird feeds on the pods of the māmane. Our hālau danced this mele kneeling, using a single pūʻili. This love song was composed in the mid-1800s for the Queen Consort of Kamehameha III, Kapakuhaili Hakaleleponi Kalama. I selected the name for this design so that we would always remember the association. Yellow māmane were often mentioned in monarch-period poetry, a metaphor for the women of rank, beauty and character. The Māluakiʻiwai is the famous, water-fetching sea breeze of Hilo often seen approaching land from the distant breakwater.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
