This button up aloha shirt features our Nānā Nō A Ka ʻUlu I Pakī Kēpau print on Navy material with Spa Blue and Cloud ink.
Nānā Nō A Ka ʻUlu I Pakī Kēpau
Design Name: Nānā nō a ka ʻulu i pakī kēpau.
Art: Breadfruit (malo and lau)
Literally: Look for the breadfruit spattered with gum.
Figuratively: A man of substance.
The breadfruit is an icon. Its leaves and fruit are images of Polynesia and represent so much within the cultures of Pacifica. The fruit is tasty and versatile in so many varied dishes.
The malo or the leaf sheath, the skin of the fruit, and the leaves make up this design layout. It was on the last trip to Tahiti that I was inspired to create this breadfruit layout because of the incredible experiences we had with our Tahitian friends.
The Hawaiian saying, “Look for the breadfruit spattered with gum” indicates which fruit is ready for gathering. The deeper meaning reflects the knowledge of our elders, teaching the youth to search for maturity when seeking a partner in life.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
