Holoholo ʻ25

This year we feature an essential thread of our lifestyle and culture—Lawai’a. We named the theme “Holoholo” to highlight the practices, folklore, and beliefs of fishing from a Hawaiian perspective. Encapsulated within the name “Holoholo” is also a regard for nature; that the fish can hear you and second; a layer of humility in not needing to say what you’re doing. As one of the core cultural practices that up keep a Kūahu, there is a respect in the relationship between kanaka and nature. From the prized Ulua to the legend of Kuʻula and ‘Aiʻai, we explore these stories through our art. 

Going holoholo was one of my Dad’s first loves when he moved to Hawaiʻi Island and one of the reasons he stayed here, making Hilo his home. As we begin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sig Zane Designs, we reflect on our origins, honor our foundation of cultural practices, and continue our mission of education.
