This pullover Aloha shirt features our Pili Laʻele print on Black material with Key Lime and Otter ink.
Pili Laʻele
ʻUlana lau hala continues to be an esteemed cultural practice in Hawaiʻi. Pāpale and moena, treasured articles of the craft, all begin with the selection of leaves. Our eyes are open, always seeking that special tree with leaves that will become the next woven object!
Names were given to the leaves, beginning with the dried leaves at the bottom and ascending to those not yet unfolded at the top of the swirl. Laʻele were the older dark green leaves above the dried brown leaves. Pili laʻele were the green leaves just above the laʻele. Translated, Pili-Laʻele, “close to laʻele” were woven into ordinary mats. Koʻo and ʻiʻo koʻo were the light green leaves selected for fine mats.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
