Pōhakulani

Gathering liko for lei is always a treat.  In the quiet morning, the forest is alive, refreshed after a night of mist and rain.  Gazing over the tops of the ʻōhiʻa trees, I search for the colorful orange, burgundy, and deep red shoots.  These are my favorites to make lei.

 Plentiful after a long period of rain, the “stretched” liko tops are treasured.  These tall, young shoots are gathered not for lei, but are arranged in a glass vase, placed on the kuahu hula, or on a special stand.  These are the cherished liko!

Pōhakulani was chosen as the name for this design as it honors an outstanding member of our ʻohana.  This was a wedding gift for a most beautiful hula dancer, a faithful friend, and an inspiration to life!

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
