Haliʻa Aloha 

Towering trees of this iconic leaf line streets in many places but not in Hawaiʻi. I love this tree and get so excited when its leaves turn yellow and turn the streets into a yellow carpet of leaves!  It is a temperate-climate tree that has not been successful in growing in the islands. Being a native from China, this tree is amazing as it was growing during the Jurassic period some 150 million years ago!

Around Chinese New Year, my Aunty Alice would make a huge pot of jai, filled with gingko. I would search them out in this holiday special, often called Chinese Monk’s food. Fresh roasted nuts is a favorite!  An extract from the leaves, gingko biloba, is popular promoting good blood circulation in the brain, thus slowing the onset of dementia.

This name, Haliʻaaloha, refers to cherished memories. Always wanting to keep this special experiences close to our hearts, I felt that eating gingko will help keep these memories always fresh!
