HWN Design Theory
Last winter at Kaiao Space we featured an exhibit highlighting the work of a class that Kūhaʻo co-taught along side Karla Sierralta at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa School of Architecture. We had a great showing and were able to feature guest speakers Billy Kinney, Assistant Director of the Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana and Kapua Pimentel, Assoc. AIA, NOMA Architectural Designer.
We also offered limited items to commemorate the class and the “Hwn Design Theory” exhibit, available for purchase online now.
The Hawaiʻi Public Archives Project is a research and teaching initiative led by Karla Sierralta of the UHM School of Architecture and Kūhaʻo Zane of Sig Zane Designs / SZK. The project imagines future spaces for Hawaiʻi's Public Archives, centered on the care, visibility, and cultural significance of Hawaiʻi's histories and collections.
This exhibition presents eight concepts that distill the ideas of nineteen undergraduate students in a BEnvD studio at the UHM School of Architecture. Working within a course-integrated research framework—in collaboration with the Hawaiʻi State Archives and supported by a network of academics, cultural practitioners, and government partners—students envisioned a hybrid cultural center that weaves exhibition, education, and archival functions, guided by Kūhaʻo Zane's Hawaiian Design Theory.
