Kaimanaola
Watching Waikīkī beach boys thread coconut leaves into hats intrigued me as a child. Cool, calm, and collected, they influenced us teenagers! Years later I remember watching a hat woven in less than ten minutes! Deft hands and a competitive
spirit inspired the beach boys to making hats in record time.
Weaving pāpale niu, coconut hats, is an art that is rarely seen these days. Dark green and pliable, the coconut fronds make hats that are perfect for Hawaiian temperatures. The hats are refreshingly cool and a great example of native craft.
Kai-mana-ola translates figuratively as “The-Spritual-Essence of the Sea.” We give this name to this art because the actual hat was woven by our friend Paul Kema.
It is a gift for his daughter Kaimanaola.
A note on the hand-cutting of this art: The challenge of hand-cutting the actual weaving was one of the most difficult pieces for me. The in-and-out interwork required an approach to hand-cutting differently which resulted in a challenging illustration.
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
