Kamakalaukoa
In the Hawaiian forest, the koa tree stands the tallest. The crescent shapes of the petioles, drawing moisture in the atmosphere, directs the condensation to its understory.
The art of koa leaves and its petioles were first introduced back a few years. They represented the graduating class from the Ke Ana Laʻahana Charter School. Their experiences with a koa canoe inspired them to research the koa tree and its symbolism.
The name, Ka-Maka-Lau-Koa, refers to the experiences of the students, their studies of koa and the youthful eagerness without fear in their desire to conquer life. The literal meaning is The-Many-Faces-Of-Koa which alludes to the students’ enthusiasm.
