Kauliluakōikeao

(ka-uli-lua-kō-i-ke-ao) emerging into the light

The fresh, young tips of the ʻōhiʻan are prized for their color and making lei.  They are gathered from in the early morning as they have been strengthened by the night’s moisture. These young leaf buds and colorful tips are called liko and are often mentioned in chant and song, sometimes referring to youth.

The name of this design, Kauliluakōikeao originates from one of the traditional mele pahu learned in hula.  This design honors the newborn as the freshest liko, the prized leaf bud of the uplands.

Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Pullover features a half placket and is designed slightly wider to allow over-the-head dressing with ease. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
