Lei Hoaka

I started making lei with koa in the early 1990s. I used the crescent-shaped petioles, braiding them together with ti leaves. It was my offering of kinolau to be placed on the kuahu hula at our hālau.

Hoaka is the second night of the moon phase.  The new waxing moon has a similar shape to the koa petioles.  We intuitively called this design Lei Hoaka, honoring koa and the second day of the moon phase.

This treasured lei continues to be a favorite.  Unique, handsome, and an expression of bravery and fearlessness, we honor the tallest tree in our native forests.
