Nā Haumana
There at Honohononui in Keaukaha, some of the very best quality of hau is gathered. The trees grow in spring waters filled with nutrients that in turn provide vigorous, healthy branches. These branches are perfect for making cordage from its bark.
We had the privilege of working with some of the graduating classes at Ke Ana Laʻahana Public Charter School. We meet with them prior to their graduation and drew from their stories to create a print reflective of their personal experiences.
One year, hau was a perfect metaphor of the character of the students. The manner in which it grows at Honohononui exemplified their personalities. Nā Haumana literally means “The Students.” We play with the meaning of Nā-Hau-Mana, and offer this figurative interpretation, The-Powerful-Hau, for the impressive tree and its many cultural and practical uses.
As the thirteenth day of the moon phase, Hua is just before the full moon phases. Shaped like an egg, this is a good time to plant fruiting trees. In business, this is great day to start a company or collaborate!
Honoring this moon phase, we have named this dress Hua. The silhouette is A-shaped, tea length, stand-up collar, and easy button-up front. Comfort for everyday wear!
