This Button Up Aloha Shirt features our Pililāʻau print on Ivy material with Charcoal and Champagne ink.
Pililāʻau
Kepuhi Beach at the West end of Molokaʻi is the perfect place to watch the sun set. Surrounded by naupaka, I was intrigued by its growth, thriving in the heat. Different from the low lying bush shapes at other locations in the islands, the naupaka here stood tall. Serving as an ideal backdrop, I had a chance to study its growing pattern.
The manner of its growth - the many branches along with the leaf and flower clusters - reminded me of our families. The connection between current generations and our ancestors who are deeply rooted to these lands.
This design was inspired by the growth pattern of the naupaka at Kepuhi Beach. The name Pililāʻau illustrates the relationship between the branches, leaves, and flower clusters. Figuratively, the name emphasizes the symbiotic interaction between branches of ʻohana. We translate Pililāʻau as “The Close Knit Branches” of the ʻohana.
Button Up Aloha Shirt
Inspired by the ivy-league shirts of the early 1900s, the fabric designs are pure Hawai‘i, and the look is pleasingly fresh. The Button Up is an open front, tapered shirt with a full length placket. Coconut buttons are featured on the stand-up, button-down collar and on the front placket. Tuck it in or leave it out over the trousers for a more casual look. Either way, it's the perfect touch of crisp aloha!
