Hawaiʻi Land Trust (HILT) is Hawaiʻi’s islands-wide land trust that is both a Hawaiʻi 501(c)3 nonprofit, and a nationally accredited land trust. HILT formed in 2011 from a merger of four island land trusts on Maui, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, and Kauaʻi. HILT has protected over 22,500 acres across Hawaiʻi, through 8 public preserves owned and stewarded by HILT, 53 conservation easements protecting agricultural, ecological, and cultural resources on private lands. We protect lands that are integral to Hawaiʻi’s well-being and character, upholding our kuleana to these lands, and the communities they are in, through thoughtful stewardship that deepens community connection to, and builds reciprocal relationships with, ʻāina. In 2023, Hawai‘i Land Trust (HILT), in partnership with Nā Kālai Wa’a, the Kohala community, County of Hawai‘i, State, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife, completed HILT’s purchase and permanent protection of 642 acres of Mahukona lands, embracing the kuleana of its stewardship for the benefit of the community.
